Self-taught artist Mel Corkum was born in the coastal village of Middle South, in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. He travelled the world during his years serving in the military, and as a civilian. Mel retired in 1980 and settled in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Following his retirement he kept busy with arts and crafts, and began painting at the age of 87. He passed away in 2009.
